The Simple Technique That Makes Headshots Pop

As a headshot photographer, I love exploring new ways to make portraits feel more alive—more interesting, more personal, and more memorable. Whether I’m photographing a CEO, a lawyer, or a fresh college grad, my goal is to create an image that’s both professional and full of personality.

One of my favorite tricks for doing just that? Using a window as the background.

It might sound simple, but the impact it creates can be stunning.

When I position someone in front of a window, I’m not just using natural light—I’m using the world outside the glass as part of the image. Reflections of trees, sky, buildings, or greenery add this subtle texture and dimension to the background. It softens the image in a natural, organic way, and gives a sense of place without being distracting.

To take things even further, I shoot with a wide aperture (usually f/3.6), which blurs those reflections into a smooth, dreamy backdrop. What you get is a professional headshot that still feels creative and unique—something that stands out from the sea of white backgrounds and stiff studio setups.

It’s not about making things complicated—it’s about being intentional with small choices that make a big difference. This is one of the ways I keep my craft sharp. Photography, to me, is more than just a job. It’s something I constantly experiment with, and refine. Simple techniques like this let me stay creative while delivering results that clients love.

A few years ago, I worked with a finance company that provides capital to underserved communities—fairly and responsibly. I traveled to three of their offices across Los Angeles and Orange County, and each time, we used a window as the backdrop. The reflections we captured with trees and bushes added this subtle richness to each portrait. The consistency of the setup gave the team a unified look, while the unique backdrops brought out the character of each location. It’s still one of my favorite series of headshots. If you’re looking for a headshot that feels both professional and fresh, I’d love to work with you. I serve the entire LA metro area and regularly host company-wide headshot days on location.

How to Find the Right Headshot Photographer for You

As a headshot photographer here in Los Angeles, I know how important it is to find someone who gets your vibe, your industry, and your goals. A great headshot does more than just look good—it tells your story and aligns with your personal brand or company image.

Here are a few tips to help you find the right photographer for your next headshot session:

1.  Check Their Portfolio

Before booking, take a close look at the photographer’s portfolio. Does their style align with the look you’re going for? Whether you want something clean and classic or more modern and relaxed, their previous work should reflect the vibe you’re after—especially if you’re trying to match your company’s website or brand identity.

2. Read Testimonials and Reviews

What are others saying about working with them? Go beyond the star ratings and dig into detailed reviews. Look for notes on the overall experience—how they communicated, how comfortable clients felt, and how happy they were with the final images.

3. Do They Work with Professionals Like You?

It helps to work with a photographer who understands your field. Are they experienced with business and corporate headshots? Whether you’re a lawyer, doctor, real estate agent, or part of a fast-moving startup, the right photographer knows how to present you in a way that builds trust and authority.

4.  Consider the Location

Is their studio convenient? Or even better—are they able to travel to your office for on-site sessions? Flexibility with location can make all the difference, especially when coordinating team headshots.

5. What’s Their Retouching Style?

Natural retouching is key. You want to look like yourself—just on your best day. Check out examples of their work to make sure it aligns with your expectations.

I take headshots across the LA area, with offices in Venice, Santa Monica, and Culver City, and I regularly travel to offices throughout the LA metro for company-wide headshot events.

My Headshot Editing Style: Real, But Polished

My headshot editing style is real, but polished. That phrase captures everything I aim for in my work. I believe a great headshot should still look like you. You don’t need to be airbrushed into someone unrecognizable to have a powerful, professional image. You just need the right light, the right pose, and a thoughtful touch in post-production.

When I edit a headshot, I’m not trying to reinvent you. I’m here to help you show up as the best version of yourself — confident, approachable, and ready to make an impression.

Here’s What My Editing Includes:

  • Blemish Removal: Temporary imperfections like pimples or redness? Gone. Your skin will still look natural, just with a little polish.
  • Subtle Skin Softening: I give your skin a light, professional touch-up — nothing heavy or fake. Think clean and clear, not plastic or overly smooth.
  • Flyaway Hair Taming: Stray hairs can be distracting, especially in close-up portraits. I carefully clean these up while preserving the natural shape and flow of your hair.
  • Color Correction: A touch of color grading can do wonders. I make sure your skin tones look natural, the lighting feels balanced, and the overall image has a clean, cohesive look.

That’s it. No aggressive filters. No reshaping of your features. No turning you into someone you wouldn’t recognize in the mirror. Just a well-lit, professionally edited portrait that shows you at your best.

Why It Matters

Your headshot is often your first impression — on LinkedIn, your company website, or even in a pitch deck. It tells people you care about how you present yourself, and it sets the tone for how you’re perceived.

When your photo feels real and polished, you come across as both authentic and professional. And that’s a powerful combination — whether you’re a CEO, an entrepreneur, a creative, or a team member at a growing company.

Headshots in Venice, Santa Monica & Culver City

I work with professionals all over the Los Angeles area, with photography locations in VeniceSanta Monica, and Culver City. I also travel to offices throughout the LA metro area for team sessions and company-wide headshot events.

So, whether you’re launching a new personal brand or your entire team needs a headshot refresh, I’m here to help you get portraits that feel natural, professional, and — above all — you.
