Capturing the Vibes Royale: A Photography Journey with Musician Eric Gray

Being a professional photographer has allowed me to connect with extraordinary individuals and explore captivating stories through the lens of my camera. One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had was when the talented musician, Eric Gray, approached me to create the album cover for his latest musical masterpiece, “Vibes Royale.” This is the story of our photography journey that culminated in an album cover shoot at the historic Culver Hotel.

Eric Gray, a self-taught lead guitarist, is a true gem in the world of music. His roots are deep in the blues, but his artistry transcends genres. From Smooth Jazz to Easy-Listening and American Radio Classics, Eric’s music is a testament to his versatility. Based in the heart of Los Angeles, his story began on the bustling streets of Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Culver City, and Inglewood, where he launched his career as a musician. The eclectic backdrop of California’s diverse music scene played a significant role in shaping his musical odyssey.

My connection with Eric Gray began on the streets of Downtown Culver City. He’s a familiar face to locals, often found performing outside the popular Ugo Culver City restaurant. Our initial encounter blossomed into a friendship, and I would frequently visit him after work, enjoying his music and catching up. So, when Eric decided to release his new album, he asked me to be the photographer for his album cover.

On the day of our photoshoot for his new “Vibes Royale” album cover, we embarked on a journey through the heart of Culver City, capturing moments against the backdrop of some of the city’s most iconic locations. One of the places we took pictures in front of was Culver City Hall, but it was our time inside the historic Culver Hotel that truly brought our photography vision to life.

Established in 1924, the Culver Hotel is an iconic landmark in Culver City. Its four-story Renaissance Revival-style architecture, distinctive red-tiled roof, and beautiful courtyard make it a visual delight. Inside, the hotel boasts Art Deco design elements, creating a unique atmosphere that blends history and style seamlessly. Choosing The Culver Hotel as our location was a no-brainer, given its rich history and breathtaking aesthetics.

“Vibes Royale” is Eric Gray’s latest musical creation, following the success of his debut album, “Setting The Mood.” This album takes us on a delightful journey through Smooth Jazz and Jazz Fusion, promising to transport listeners to a world of sonic beauty. The opening track, “Smooth Walker,” is a classic guitar masterpiece that sets the stage for an unforgettable musical experience. Eric’s exceptional guitar work shines through in this track, weaving its magic and leaving an indelible mark on every listener’s soul.

In conclusion, working with Eric Gray to capture the essence of “Vibes Royale” was a photographic journey that transcended the boundaries of music and visual art. The streets of Culver City, with their rich history, provided a perfect backdrop for our creative vision. The icing on the cake was our photoshoot at the iconic Culver Hotel, adding a touch of timeless elegance to the album’s cover.

As a photographer, I’m deeply appreciative of the connections and opportunities this art form has brought into my life. Collaborating with artists like Eric Gray to tell their stories through the lens of my camera is a privilege that I cherish. It is a testament to the power of art and the magic of capturing moments that define us.
